Electronic tongue could let you taste cake in virtual reality

Hydrogels with a taste are administered into the mouth via a small tubeShulin Chen An electronic tongue that can replicate flavours like cake and fish soup could help recreate food in virtual reality, but can’t yet simulate other things that influence taste, such as smell. Yizhen Jia at The Ohio State University and his colleagues have developed a system, called e-Taste, that can sample a food and work out how to partly recreate its flavour in someone’s mouth. This involves using chemicals that correspond to the five basic tastes: sodium chloride for salty, citric acid for sour, glucose for sweet, magnesium chloride for bitter and glutamate for umami. “Those five flavours are already accounting for a very large spectrum of the food we have daily,” says Jia. The sy...

Lord of Ether and Light – Earliest Astronomical Drawings on display at Armagh Planetarium  – Astronotes

Fig 1: Sketches of the Orion Nebulae, on display in the Armagh Planetarium. It takes a good telescope to see deep into space, but it takes a Great Telescope to change how we see the entire universe. In 1845 such a telescope was built by the 3rd Earl of Rosse, in the grounds of his castle in the town of Birr, County Offaly. He didn’t build it alone however; he was inspired by earlier instruments, such as the 4-foot reflector made by Sir William Herschel. That telescope had been so powerful that it helped Sir Herschel discover a new planet for the first time in thousands of years. He was also aided by more recent developments, such as the new technology employed by Thomas Grubb in his 15-inch telescope he built for Armagh Observatory in 1834.   The Great Telescope used a 6-foot mirror to gat...

Pentagon Probes UFO Whistleblower Jake Barber’s Explosive Claims • Latest UFO Sightings

The U.S. Department of Defense has confirmed that it is actively investigating claims made by Jake Barber, a whistleblower who recently spoke on NewsNation about his involvement in the government’s recovery of UFO technology. This investigation marks a significant step forward in the ongoing scrutiny of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), though concerns about transparency remain. The Pentagon’s Official InvestigationAccording to investigative journalist Ross Coulthart, the Pentagon’s confirmation of this inquiry is a notable yet incremental development. The director of the Pentagon’s UAP investigation office, Dr. John Kloski, has expressed a serious commitment to investigating the phenomenon. However, he also admitted that his authority is limited by Pentagon regulations, which dictate th...

Nien Nunb – ‘Star Wars’ Character Spotlight

Nien Nunb is the focus of this week’s Star Wars Character Spotlight, the Sullustan rebel pilot mostly famous for being Lando Calrissian’s copilot in the Battle of Endor. The Sullustan pilot has a surprisingly fleshed out backstory, with a rich history as a rebel fighting against oppressive regimes, going all the way into the sequel trilogy era.  Joining the Rebellion  We don’t see exactly how Nien Nunb joins up with the Rebel Alliance, but the updated and expanded Star Wars Character Encyclopedia and Princess Leia comic miniseries tell us about Nien Nunb’s early missions with them. Nunb learned how to fly when he joined the SoroSuub Corporation, but became disillusioned with the company once it started cooperating with the Empire.  He stole his freighter from SoroSuub and handed it over...
