Rethinking Energy Systems in the Age of AI – State of the Planet

This story was originally published by the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment, a joint center of Columbia Law School and Columbia Climate School. The world’s energy systems and digital infrastructure are undergoing rapid and interconnected transformations. The continued expansion of data centers—driven by growing demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning and next-generation digital services—is fueling a rapid and significant rise in energy consumption in certain markets, with implications for global energy systems. At the same time, the suite of digital technologies supported by these data centers is reshaping the very design, efficiency and resilience of the energy systems on which they depend—while also transforming essential public services across s...

Image: Will Robinson-Smith/Spaceflight Now It’s round two for both United Launch Alliance and its customer, Amazon. Monday, June 16, will be ULA’s second Atlas 5 launch of the year and the second batch of Amazon’s Project Kuiper satellites launched to date. Liftoff for the 205-foot-tall (62.5 m) rocket is currently set for 1:25 p.m. EDT (1725 UTC) from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. This is the opening of a 30-minute launch window. Spaceflight Now will have live coverage beginning about an hour prior to liftoff. On Sunday, the 45th Weather Squadron forecast a 75 percent chance for fa...

NASA — What does it take to see this? Decades of…

Our James Webb Space Telescope is an epic mission that will give us a window into the early universe, allowing us to see the time period during which the first stars and galaxies formed. Webb will not only change what we know, but also how we think about the night sky and our place in the cosmos. Want to learn more? Join two of our scientists as they talk about what the James Webb Telescope is, why it is being built and what it will help us learn about the universe…First, meet Dr. Amber Straughn. She grew up in a small farming town in Arkansas, where her fascination with astronomy began under beautifully dark, rural skies. After finishing a PhD in Physics, she came to NASA Goddard to study galaxies using data from our Hubble Space Telescope. In addition to research, Amber’s role with the W...

Building Mobility, Resilience and Connection in a Changing Climate – State of the Planet

What does mobility look like in the face of climate change? How can we build more just and climate-resilient communities? When should areas opt for adaptation in place over managed retreat? These are just some of the questions to expect at this year’s MR2025 (formerly known as Managed Retreat) conference. Hosted by the Columbia Climate School, the event will tackle the multifaceted concerns of mobility, adaptation and wellbeing—and their shifting roles in response to global climate threats. Now in its fourth iteration, MR2025 will once again bring together hundreds of representatives from the public, private and nonprofit sectors alongside scientists, academics and community members from around the world. It will be held from June 16 to June 18, in partnership with the Global Centre...

Sierra Space doubles down on defense

WASHINGTON — Sierra Space, the aerospace firm best known for its spaceplane designed for NASA cargo missions, is going all in on defense. The Colorado-based company on June 11 announced the formal launch of Sierra Space Defense, a division focused on national security programs. The business unit will be led by Erik Daehler, a former Lockheed Martin executive who has been building the defense portfolio behind the scenes. “We’re officially introducing the defense tech business that we’ve been building up in stealth mode for the last two and a half years, and formalizing it in our organization,” Daehler told SpaceNews. Focus on satellite buses and components Formed in 2021 as a commercial space spinout of defense contractor Sierra Nevada Corporation, Sierra Space initially...
