SpaceX swaps Falcon 9 boosters ahead of Starlink launch from Cape Canaveral – Spaceflight Now

SpaceX is preparing to launch its first Starlink mission from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in more than two weeks. The last time the company attempted to launch the Starlink 10-2 mission, it encountered a rare scrub as the Falcon 9’s first stage Merlin engines began firing. Liftoff of the rescheduled flight is set for 1:15 p.m. EDT (1715 UTC) from Space Launch Complex 40. Spaceflight Now will have live coverage beginning about an hour prior to liftoff. Activity in the tropics creates some uncertainty for the launch from a meteorological perspective. On Saturday, June 22, the 45th Weather Squadron issued a launch weather forecast that suggests just 50 percent odds of...

LOS ANGELES (AFNS) --  In remarks to the Los Angeles chapter of the Air & Space Forces Association, Lt. Gen. Philip Garrant, commander of Space Systems Command, said SSC’s focus on acquiring and delivering resilient war fighting capabilities to protect the nation’s strategic advantage in, from, and to space, is nearly impossible without the relentless dedication of its workforce, allies and industry partnerships.“We all know the change never stops, but in the past two to three years SSC has seen a lot,” Garrant said. “We need to continue refining what a field command for an acquisition organization looks like, get after developing our workforce, and focus on delivering capabilities – most importantly, we need clear cut priorities when it comes to o...

What “naked” singularities are revealing about quantum space-time

Adobe Stock/Erika Eros/Alamy/Collage: Ryan Wills Deep inside a black hole, the cosmos gets twisted beyond comprehension. Here, at some infinitesimal point of infinite density, the fabric of the universe gets so ludicrously warped that Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity, which describes how mass bends space-time, ceases to make sense. At the singularity, our understanding falls apart. As daunting as singularities are, each one is at least safely tucked away inside the event horizon of a black hole, the boundary beyond which we can’t see. This not only cloaks them from view, but also stops unknown effects they herald, namely the horrors of unpredictability, from leaching out into the wider universe. But what if singularities could exist outside black holes af...
