Concept art of Aspyr’s cancelled Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake has surfaced online from MP1st showcasing how the studio was intending to redesign the Wookiee homeworld of BioWare’s iconic game. The remake is now being redeveloped by Saber Interactive.
The concept art shows the planet Kashyyyk, one of four planets that the player character and their party visits after completing both the Taris and Dantooine portions of the galaxy-spanning adventure. The concept art was shared by one of the artists who worked on Aspyr’s version of the game as part of their creative portfolio, showing plans for a more elaborate redesign. You can look at it below:

What does this mean for progress on the revival? Realistically, nothing – this is relevant only to the previous version of the game before it switched development teams. The development on the remake of Knights of the Old Republic has been a long and troubled process. Initially announced as a PlayStation exclusive in 2021, Aspyr Media – a company that usually prioritized remasters rather than full-blown remakes – took the helm of the project. Saber Interactive was rumored to be enlisted, seemingly to help Aspyr, but the project moved completely out of Aspyr’s hands as much of their work was discarded to be redeveloped from scratch. As it stands, the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake remains in the pipeline with little update on its progress other than Saber Interactive executive Tim Willits reaffirming that development on the game is moving right along, albeit with nothing to show for it.

The story of the original Knights of the Old Republic, set in the Legends continuity, put players in the midst of a Republic and Sith conflict thousands of years before the events of the Skywalker Saga. In that story, the player character is told to rescue and recruit Bastila Shan, a Jedi with the ability to turn the tide of battle, and reunite her with the Jedi Order. Once the players have formed an alliance with her, they discover their hidden connection with the Force and begin a search for the Star Forge, a factory with a strong enough output to bring the Republic to its knees. While all pathways set the player against Darth Malak, the apprentice of Darth Revan and the usurper of the Sith, players ultimately make a series of decisions that determine whether they will fight to save the Republic or to take Malak’s place and rule the Sith.
