Using VIM

Example 1: Multiple cutouts of multiple sources

VIM can be used to make JPEG cutouts of sources, using any of the surveys that Skyview covers. YOu can use your own VOTable of sources, you can build a VOTable using the NVO Table Wizard, or you can use one of the example tables, as outlined here.

(1) Click on the "Example Tables" (red oval), and a new window comes up. Copy the URL for 10 bright galaxies from SDSS, this (on the Mac do right click and "Copy Link Location".
(2) From the Vim menu, select Load Sky Positions / From Link to VOTable.
(3) Paste the URL for the 10 SDSS galaxies into the tool, and click the button labelled "Get Positions from URL"

You should see the table of sources come up, it should look like where it says "Uploaded Table" in the screenshot at right.

Now let us make the cutouts. From the menu, select Fetch Data / Skyview Cutouts

In the Skyview tool, select one or more image surveys from the list, here we have chosen "2nd Digitized Sky Survey" Red and Blue. You can select the cutout size, the default is 300 pixels, you can also choose a name for the resulting table, then click the button to start the process.

You will see red text showing the progress of the cutouts, updated every 2 seconds (doesn't work in Safari browser, sorry).

When the cutouts are finished, they are shown as thumbnails in the table. Just hover the mouse over a thumbnail to show the whole image.
