OpenCluster::Node
-----------------

OpenClusterNode is a full sky node for associating, integrating and curating
astronomical data for individual open and globular star clusters. Web services
will include the ability to identify all relevant broadband photometric
catalogs, SIAP and SSAP services for each curated star cluster. The archive
will be sourced from tabular data registered in the VO under non-sky nodes
(e.g, TabularSkyServices from CDS), archival data currently available only in
the literature but which we will curate into OpenClusterNode, and new data
ingested into OpenClusterNode after validation against its curation protocols.

-----------------
Background & Goal:
-----------------

Open Cluster imaging surveys have member/detection rates of <1%. Although
surveys of Globular Clusters have more favorable target/non-target ratios, both
types of spatially constrained surveys yield detection cones containing
substantial numbers of foreground/background galactic sources as well as
extragalactic sources. Moreover, any particular star cluster currently has a
large number (N>3) of pointed surveys, most of which are not currently
registered in the VO and very few of which are cross-referenced or simply
matched. New observations of a star cluster should be able to integrate their
results directly with existing data, enabling data quality checks and ensuring
proper citation of pre-existing results. Integration and curation of full
spectrum archival data for any source seen toward a particular star cluster
enables automated source classification and spectral energy distribution
analysis. It also enables the construction of pseudo time-series image and
photometric analysis, as well as proper motion studies. The goal of
OpenClusterNode is organize and and curate archival resources on specific star
clusters and provide these resources to the VO.

Given the resources already registered in the VO and the degree of organization
pre-existing in the VO, we propose to focus on searching for and ingesting
registered datasets for particular clusters into a curated database. Such a sky
node could be redeployed for other objects of interest and register/serve new
datasets which are beyond the timescale of the summer school.

-----------------
Project Outline:
-----------------

I. Full Sky Node development

II. MySQL db controlling:
resource metadata gleaned from Registries
curated archival datasets
ingesting new data from outside sources.

II. VO Table /DB design

III. Web Services Design.

IV. Data Manipulation
Define "trusted" databases.
Use survey "union" rather than survey "intersection"

Working examples:
-----------------
NGC 2547: 400pc 25 Myr Open Cluster
47 Tuc: Rather well studied Globular Cluster

-----------------
Future Goals:
-----------------

This harvesting portal for specific objects should/could be redeployed for
studying any particular subset of interesting objects.
