Natalie Portman Open to Returning to ‘Star Wars’

In a recent segment with GQ Magazine, Natalie Portman stated that she is open to returning to Star Wars. The actress famously portrayed Padmé Amidala in the prequel trilogy, but has not made an appearance in the franchise since Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

In the video, Natalie Portman replied to a Reddit question asking if there was “any chance that Padmé/Natalie Portman returns to Star Wars?”, to which she replied with the following:

“I have no information on this. No one has ever asked me to return, but I’m open to it.”

Hearing this comment from an actor from the prequel trilogy certainly rings a bell. Her co-star Ewan McGregor said for years he’d love to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi to tell a story set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, which ultimately morphed into last year’s Obi-Wan Kenobi. From her comment, though, it sounds interesting (and a bit questionable) that nobody asked her to return for a cameo in the Deborah Chow-directed series.

And much like McGregor’s Obi-Wan and many other characters from those movies, Padmé Amidala has seen a bit of a resurgence. Even though the character died in Revenge of the Sith, that hasn’t stopped the character from appearing outside of the movies. Most notably, Padmé was the center of focus of an entire trilogy of books written by E.K. Johnston which fills in some of the story gaps between Episodes 1-3. Padmé has also appeared in flashbacks and visions in recent Darth Vader comics and the VR game Vader Immortal.

Both Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor have expressed interest in the past in returning to work on more Star Wars projects. While this is unconfirmed and purely speculation, it could be possible with all three actors interested that there could be a reunion of sorts for the trio from the prequels. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series did reunite Christensen and McGregor. It could be possible, should another season of Obi-Wan Kenobi be given the green light, that Portman could also appear. For now, though, there is no official word that this is happening despite McGregor reiterating at last month’s Star Wars Celebration that he would love to return once again.
