Deviations – Threads of Destiny’ Comic – TrekMovie.com

IDW is celebrating the legacy of Star Trek icon Nichelle Nichols and Black History Month with a special one-shot comic this week, focusing on the character of Uhura. The new one-shot comic titled Star Trek: Deviations – Threads of Destiny is written by Stephanie Williams, who has several credits on both DC and Marvel comics, including Wonder Woman and X-Men comics. Art in the classic Gold Key comics style is being done by Greg Maldonado and Anthony Fowler Jr. The Uhura one-shot goes on sale on Wednesday and we have details and a 5-page preview.

Star Trek: Deviations – Threads of Destiny

This is the second Star Trek “Deviations” one-shot from IDW, which presents “alternate takes,” in this case re-imagining the TOS classic episode “City on the Edge of Forever” with Uhura pulled back in time. Threads of Destiny parallels the real-life story of Uhura actress Nichelle Nichols and how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. convinced her to stay with Star Trek due to what her character represented to so many people of color.

Synopsis:

This special one-shot features Lieutenant Nyota Uhura. In the 23rd century, she explores far-flung star systems with her crew on the Enterprise as part of her mission to communicate and build bridges with life found across the Galaxy. But in the 20th century, humankind was working to build understanding among themselves, with African Americans on Earth championing the Civil Rights Movement and using their voices and acts of protest to end racial segregation and discrimination. Now, by way of the Guardian of Forever, Uhura is yanked back through time to 1963. There, she’ll join all those fighting for equality and justice and reconnect to why her work as a communications officer is perhaps the most important work of all.
